In On-Ramp to Robotics Unit 2 – Sensing students will learn about the relationships between inputs (sensing) and outputs (motors, LED's, sounds) by utilizing the built-in sensors on the hub and rover.

Search the surface of Mars for mineral deposits.

Students explore the fundamentals of using sensors to control a robotic vehicle.

Sensing distance, color and light intensity

Measurement and units

Angles and the Unit Circle

Feedback and control

Coding concepts:

  Conditional Statements

  Motion Commands

Learn to do the project yourself

Step 1: Get a Rover and Mars Map to practice with.

Go to www.TIstemProjects.com. Click on the Get Started Now button. Then fill out the form to begin the conversation with the STEM team.

Step 2: We recommend the following steps to prepare for the Rover On-Ramp to Robotics Unit 1 (Motion) lessons:

A. Start with 10 Minutes of Code Unit 1 Skill Builder 1

This “Hello World” lesson will give background on creating, storing, editing and running programs on the TI-Nspire.

B. Then do 10 Minutes of Code with TI-Innovator Technology Unit 4 (Making Rover Move)

These step-by-step skill builders will help you and your students get experience in writing programs for the Rover.

C. Then do On Ramp to Robotics: Unit 1 (Motion)/Mars Rover Challenge

Download and use the teacher materials on the activity page.

The lessons build to the final challenge of driving around the Olympus Mons volcano on the surface of Mars.

D. Finally, do On Ramp to Robotics: Unit 2 (Sensing)/Mars Rover Challenge

Download and use the teacher materials.

The lessons build to the final challenge of driving a path on the surface of Mars to discover mineral deposits of various types.
