Use an introduction to 3D graphs to reinforce understanding of 2D graphs. (Operating System 3.x)

This activity requires no prior knowledge of 3D graphing.

Starting with a new TI-Nspire document, students are taken step-by-step through the process of constructing constant, linear and then quadratic functions.

Simple transformations of these functions are done [eg. z2(x,y)=z1(x,y)+k]

As they proceed, students are asked to note down similarities and differences between the 3D experience and what they already know from 2D graphing. This reinforces the same concepts between the two environments.

A detailed 4-page Handout contains 6 tasks for the students to work through. There is also a Marking Grid, which will be helpful in assessing students? completed work.

Prior knowledge of how to insert a slider is useful to know for Task 4.

The final Task 6 requires the students to apply their knowledge to less familiar situations.

Students really enjoy the 'cool' graphs that they can create through doing this activity!
